Homebirth Testimony

(The Mom who wrote this testimony had just had her third baby; her first at home. She is a Registered Nurse and a Doctor of Chiropractic.)

I will never forget the day I stood in the bathroom doing a home pregnancy test thinking stress was the reason I was late, not because I was pregnant. I squeezed every last drop of developer out of the tube praying it would turn white--it didn't. I was filled with disbelief even after rereading the directions several times to be sure I did the test correctly. I thought I was done having children since I had two already, ages 6 & 8. I began questioning the Lord, but only He knew what a blessing lay ahead for our family.

"I began questioning the Lord, but only He knew what a blessing lay ahead for our family."

In December I had my first and last appointment with a doctor. Although she was very nice, I objected to her philosophy. She suggested extensive lab tests, sonograms, and inducing my labor so I could deliver before she took a leave of absence. Not feeling comfortable with that situation, I began to consider other options. I talked to several friends about a homebirth and they highly recommended Vickie for a midwife.

Having worked in a hospital as a nurse, the information I had about homebirths was negative. My associates in the medical profession were quick to discourage me from having a homebirth. I decided to find out for myself, so I began reading books and made an appointment with Vickie.

My first meeting with Vickie and her assistants was relaxed and very informative. I didn't hold back any questions and was impressed with Vickie's knowledge and professionalism. My ignorance was soon replaced with a confidence and peace about a homebirth. It made so much sense to have a baby naturally instead of making it a medical procedure. My biggest concern was the pain of labor. Marilyn assured me that the pain is less with a homebirth because the mother is more relaxed. Being a "doubting Thomas," I didn't think it could make that big of a difference. At the time, I had no idea how much easier and comfortable labor is in your own home. I left the office that day with a peace that I had made the right choice.

The following months Vickie monitored my progress, answered my questions, and became my friend. I was impressed with the high quality of care and concern I received. It was surprising how comforting it was to know exactly who was going to be present at the birth and have a friendship with everyone. With my previous children, I didn't know any of the assistants, let alone which doctor "on call" would deliver my baby. I looked forward to this birth knowing it would be different from my others but had no idea how unique and rewarding it would be.

The day arrived a little sooner that I hoped, but I started labor anyway. My husband was working in Los Angeles and was on his way home when my labor began. I nervously stayed in bed and prayed the baby would wait until he got home. I called Vickie at 12:30 AM just to let her know what was going on, but really I needed her reassurance--which she gave me. At 4:30 AM my husband made it home, and my labor began to speed up. We called Vickie once again, and she was there before we knew it. I was relieved when everyone was there and couldn't believe I was actually doing this at home!

The labor was so different from the hospital labors I had experienced. I was used to lying in bed, having my water broken by the doctor, and being in a great amount of pain. This time I was able to walk around, drink liquids, and do whatever my body was telling me to do. The pain I had feared so much turned out to be very manageable.

At 7:01 AM our beautiful daughter Amy Katherine was born. It was such a blessing to have my husband and children there to share this joyous event. We loved having our baby with us continually and not having to deal with hospital routine.

"It was a day I will cherish forever. My homebirth turned out to be so much more than I ever expected."

It was a day I will cherish forever. My homebirth turned out to be so much more than I ever expected. It was such a positive experience that I wanted to do it all over again the next day. I used to think I would never have a baby without an epidural. Now I would only consider a homebirth with a midwife. I wish more families experienced that blessing and rewards that only a homebirth can provide. I am a true believer that births with a midwife should be the norm and not the exception.
